T.M. in a Tree ~ Justin Goodhart ~ Photograph ~ 11×14 ~ $97 ~ One of the winners of the pandemic have been our backyard birds. I’ve been feeding them a lot more, and they have been bringing me joy in return. This tufted titmouse perched in a tree above the feeders with the afternoon sun filtering in from behind and was a very chatty fellow! Patterson, NY. Click here to buy. The Cold Shoulder ~ Justin Goodhart ~ Photograph ~ 11×14 ~ $97 ~ After finishing up some yardwork, I was putting stuff away, and I noticed this beautiful Red-Shouldered Hawk in the woods behind the shed. I grabbed my camera, anticipating that they would fly quickly away, as birds like to do, but they just sat there, barely giving me a second thought, scouring the forest floor for another afternoon snack. Patterson, NY. Click here to buy. Stepping Out? ~ John Spens ~ Photograph ~ 16×9 ~ $110 ~ A Green Heron working her way through the Great Swamp. Click here to buy. What’s That? ~ John Spens ~ Photograph ~ 16×9 ~ $110 ~ Surprised by a noise, this Green Heron demonstrated how long she can stretch her neck. Click here to buy. LetsBfriends ~ Claudia Griswold ~ Photograph ~ 16×20 ~ $150 ~ Boat house on Putnam Lake. I remember thinking how in nature, coexistence just happens. So simple, yet so complex. The butterfly and the bee both feed off the same flower. Why can’t humans be the same way? Click here to buy. Nature Mimicking Nature ~ Justin Goodhart ~ Photograph ~ 8×10 ~ $67 ~ While paddling in the South Flow of the Great Swamp I spotted this Great Blue Heron sitting atop an old dead tree. I like the way the shape of the bird seemed to be a natural continuation of the shape of the tree against the bright sky. Patterson, NY. Click here to buy. Locust Borer Beetle ~ Bella Dalton-Fenkl ~ Photograph ~ 8×10 ~ $175 ~ Although locust borers are considered a pest, I have always loved how they appear to mimic both wasps and grasshoppers. Their stipes are dynamic and almost give their body the appearance of detailed masks. In this photo, the goldenrod, whose pollen the beetle feeds on, resembles many small starbursts. This photo was taken at the start of the Swamp River boardwalk. Click here to buy. Olive-green Swamp Grasshopper ~ Bella Dalton-Fenkl ~ Photograph ~ 10×8 ~ $175 ~ I enjoyed the dramatic lighting and how the textures of the grasshopper’s wings are so similar to the appearance of the wood and lichen, and how the grasshopper’s black stipes resemble the slats in the boardwalk. Lake Reflection ~ Claudia Griswold ~ Photograph ~ 16×20 ~ $150 ~ Warren Beach, Putnam Lake in the summer of 2019. The famous grand willow tree is well loved. It provides much needed shade and captures a breeze on a hot summer day. I was walking out to the dock and looked back and thought “Wow, that’s pretty cool!”. Click here to buy. Ray Lake 1 ~ Carlos Passi ~ Photograph ~ 8×12 ~ $75 ~ Ray Lake is one of my favorite locations to visit with FrOGS, offering natural beauty and many of the ecosystems that make the Great Swamp so special. This particular visit at the peak of fall, with crisp air and full of color, was a particular gem. A walk around the lake gave me the opportunity to capture its beauty. In this view of the lake, the color of the vegetation, the stillness of the water, like a mirror, gives it a special harmony and balance that seems ethereal. Click here to buy. Moon Reflection ~ Claudia Griswold ~ Photograph ~ 16×20 ~ $150 ~ Warren Beach, Putnam Lake. It was a chilly November evening when the full moon peeked thru the grand Willow tree and the light shimmered. Click here to buy. Starburst Shadow ~ Claudia Griswold ~ Photograph ~ 16×20 ~ $150 ~ Jackson Beach, Putnam Lake. On a windy, cold, snowy winter day, I watched for over an hour, the sun at just right height above the tree line and between the trunks of my favorite old tree. I laid in the snow to get the right angle-it didn’t disappoint. Click here to buy. From the Trail ~ Jeanne Plekon ~ Photograph ~ 15×19 ~ $100 ~ Photo from August 16 from the Maybrook rail trail segment in Holmes, south of Whaley Lake. Ray Lake in Fall ~ Patty Richardson ~ iphoneography ~ 18×24 ~ $100 ~ The subject inspired me as an opportunity to use Ray Lake as a reflection of the Fall trees. View of Swamp River ~ Bella Dalton-Fenkl ~ Photograph ~ 10×8 ~ $175 ~ I knew I had to take this photo from the end of the Swamp River boardwalk when I saw the light coming through the leaves and filtering through the humidity of the woods. The river and sky seem to glow in the background while all the ferns and rocks are highly detailed and become a whole world for the eye to explore. Click here to buy. Mountain Laurel ~ Bella Dalton-Fenkl ~ Photograph ~ 8×10 ~ $175 ~ This photo was taken on the Cat Rocks trail. The Little Pond ~ Susan Hennelly ~ Watercolor ~ 14×17 ~ $200 ~ The view from my house. Click here to buy. 10 Mile River ~ Susan Hennelly ~ Watercolor ~ 16×20 ~ $300 ~ Was the stone wall part of a dam or a crossing over to the old toy store at Webatuck Village? Swiftly flowing, we just had 4 inches of rain the day before. A challenge to paint those eddies and rocks. Click here to buy. Swan’s Nest from the Bridge ~ Sharon Nakazato ~ Watercolor ~ 9.5×14 ~ $150 ~ The same pair of swans have nested for years on the small island in the River at the Diverting Reservoir in Brewster, which we can now watch easily from the footbridge. I wanted to suggest the softness of the nesting site and the water in spring, almost like an ink painting. Click here to buy. Night Comes to the Reservoir ~ Sharon Nakazato ~ Oil Pastels ~ 14×15 ~ $275 ~ Whenever I came back home by train from the city in the evening, I was moved by the warmth of the evening light over the richness of the Swamp from the dam and northwards. Click here to buy. Yellow Tree, Great Swamp ~ Ned Reade ~ Oil Paint ~ 12×16 ~ $275 ~ I enjoy the painting at the Zaengle Preserve along River Rd in Pawling. Whatever the season or weather I always slow my car down to observe – it seems placid and peaceful, and the colors always reflect the season. Click here to buy. Spring Thaw ~ Marilyn Price ~ Oil Paint ~ 19×25 ~ $2,500 ~ I was inspired by the serenity and calm of the scene of the great swamp from photos taken for me as I could no longer paint directly on location. I was particularly drawn to the beauty of the reflections. Click here to buy. Swamp River Winding ~ Lynn Slonaker ~ Oil Paint ~ 12×24 ~ $500 ~ The beautiful Swamp River provides ample opportunity for painting as it winds through the Great Swamp. (Pleasant Ridge Rd, Wingdale). Click here to buy. The Path Ahead ~ Lizzie Grosso ~ Watercolor ~ 11×15 ~ $750 ~ The Appalachian Trail boardwalk off Route 22 is a quintessential place I bring anyone who visits Pawling. Spring Forward ~ Leslie Carone ~ Oil ~ 9×12 ~ $375 ~ It’s early spring, the swamp is beginning to “green up”, and the air is filled with the sound buzzing insects and birdsong. Acres of heaven, and I’m in the middle of it. Click here to buy. Swamp River ~ Laura Gould ~ Gouache ~ 12×12 ~ $175 ~ The image is from River Road in Pawling as it crosses over the Swamp River on a beautiful early fall afternoon. Appalachian Trail Crossing of Swamp River ~ Karen Maloof ~ Oil on Panel ~ 15×18 ~ $375 ~ While observing the abundance of life in the swamp, monarch butterflies, bees and a snake came to my easel. Yet, the most impressive aspect was the dead tree towering over the life of the swamp. Co-existence of the two creates a striking contrast, while sustaining each other. Click here to buy. Beautiful Evening ~ Jeanne Plekon ~ Oil Paint ~ 13×15 ~ $250 ~ Captured late afternoon light on a day the clouds parted and we saw blue sky again. Foliage was just beginning to turn, almost minute by minute as we painted. At divergent reservoir bridge in Brewster, aka East Branch Croton River; painting with FrOGS. Click here to buy. Waterlilies ~ Anne Bander ~ Watercolor on Arches paper ~ 36×24 ~ $345 ~ I took a photo on the east Branch of the Croton River and made many attempts to capture the light, the waterlilies floating in light in darkness. It remains in my mind’s eye so clearly, the inky depth both dark and transparent. This year I took a different approach using 30×22 arches 300lb paper and making liberal use of splatter, multiple washes and opaque white gouache to convey light, darkness and distance. I hope it goes some way toward expressing my delight and wonder in this and other places in the wetlands. Click here to buy. View from the Bridge ~ Georgine Honohan ~ Watercolor ~ 20.5×20.5 ~ $525 ~ The view from the bridge in Brewster. Click here to buy. I was inspired by the beautiful morning light looking up the river. Click here to buy. Summer Solstice ~ Ellen Kelly ~ Watercolor ~ 9×12 ~ $125 ~ It seemed like a lovely idea to sit down by a stream on a hot and muggy afternoon. And I was soon fascinated by the play of light on the running water. Of course I didn’t realize that I would have to share my hideway. I was visited by at least three big, friendly, wet, dogs before this picture was done. It seems they had the same idea. Fun day! Click here to buy. Reflecting ~ Alicia Earle ~ Acrylic ~ 11×14 ~ NFS/$65 prints ~ I chose to paint Putnam Lake for its natural beauty. It’s the town I’ve lived in my entire life. Brandon Preserve: After the Storm ~ Sharon Nakazato ~ Mixed/Media/Acrylic ~ 14×19.5 ~ $275 ~ After one of our recent intense storms I visited the Preserve and was struck by the way the trees held even the fallen branches, and by the brilliance of the light in the wake of the tempest: something about the sturdiness of nature and the torsion in the stillness. Click here to buy. Arbio Petrobios, Great Hollow ~ Sharon Nakazato ~ Pen and Ink ~ 19×14 ~ $235 ~ It’s fascinating how the life stories of trees and rocks are written in their physical aspects. A powerful tree with two strong trunks growing together out of the roots like this one would be called a “wife-husband tree” in Japan and many are especially revered. Click here to buy. Winter Willow ~ Rebecca Rabinowitz ~ Acrylic on canvas ~ 28×20 ~ $1,200 ~ Painted late winter 2020. Capturing the light and dramatic shadows on snow before the melt. Click here to buy. Click here to buy. Cattail ~ Kelly Edwards ~ Watercolor ~ 16×20 ~ $150 ~ I have always been drawn to Cattails in the Great Swamp as they remind me of my youth growing up in South Carolina. I wanted to highlight that bit of nostalgia and share the beauty of a piece of nature, that I think, goes too unsung. I do love spying the Red Winged Blackbirds putting the Cattails to good use as well. [SOLD] Invasives ~ Judy Kelley-Moberg ~ Pastel ~ 14×18 ~ $100 ~ The beautiful colors and textures of burning bush and bittersweet along Mill Brook in Patterson distract us as they choke out our native species. Click here to buy. GS Watershed ~ Gysela Pacheco ~ Oil on Panel ~ 14×11 ~ $224 ~ Plein Air session with the GS/Public Library. I chose this copse of trees with its foggy backdrop to paint, because on a rainy day of dark muted colors, it showed the first changes of the coming season. Click here to buy. Springtime ~ Georgine Honohan ~ Watercolor and Ink ~ 18×22 ~ $475 ~ Ray Lake in Springtime. Click here to buy. Swamp Trees ~ Doreen O’Connor ~ Acrylic on birch panel ~ 13×15 ~ $300 ~ I have been trying to find a safe (from rushing traffic) place to paint the swamp as it passes under rte 311 in Patterson. I went down a drive next to the Swamp and was given permission to paint the dying swamp trees through the wall of greenery. Thanks to the home owner I have not found again. Click here to buy. Swamp Maples ~ Doreen O’Connor ~ Acrylic on birch panel ~ 12.5×15 ~ $250 ~ As I arrived at the paint-out at the Patterson Library grounds on a dull, cloudy day, I was glad to find that the swamp trees were turning red and gold behind the wall of green with some golden rod. I had a scene with interest. Click here to buy. Beginning of Fall ~ Judy Oliver ~ Watercolor ~ 5.5×8.5 ~ $45 ~ This is a small painting done from the lawn of the Patterson Library at the beginning of fall. Twilight ~ Sharon Tsao ~ Oil Paint ~ 20×24 ~ $2,000 ~ When the last ray of sunshine casted on the trees, I realized that this is the last and most fantastic glory…a symbol people realize that they have to grasp the last glow of life, before darkness closes in. I painted the moment… Click here to buy. Last Glowing ~ Sharon Tsao ~ Oil Paint ~ 16×20 ~ $1,000 ~ Between the water and the sky, we live. Fantasy, dream, sky, water reflection, all embraced by the light of the golden sunset. Click here to buy. Autumn Leaves ~ Sharon Tsao ~ Oil Paint ~ 16×20 ~ $1,000 ~ From the fall of leaves, we know that autumn is coming, from the slanting of the sunlight, we know the evening is falling, and from a single strand of white hair, we know that we’re aging… every moment in our life can be a fantastic moment.
