Students in Ms. Swarm’s 5th grade art class focused on four of the FrOGS featured animals: Bobcat, Box Turtle, Praying Mantis, and the Great Blue Heron. Students selected one of the four animals mentioned here and began their works of art by using old magazines and glue/scissors to collage the frame. Students learned how to use the magazines as their “palette.” Next, collage was used to add color to the animal. Finally, watercolor was used to add accents to their animals and/or background. Students were encouraged to draw on their own creativity to interpret their selected animal including the style of their animal and its habitat (realistic or abstract or somewhere in between!).
